An introduction to Belgrade

Belgrade (Beograd), the capital of Serbia, is an ancient yet youthful city, with more than two-fifths of its 1.7 million inhabitants aged between 15 and 44 years. It has unsurprisingly become something of a party capital, but the city has plenty more to recommend it. It's particularly hard to ignore Belgrade's past - the city has been destroyed countless times during its history, and this has created an interesting mix of architectural styles that makes it a fascinating holiday destination.

Belgrade in brief

Belgrade is located in the centre of south-east Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, and is Serbia's largest city. It has been nominated for European Capital of Culture in 2020, indicating that there is plenty for those staying in holiday apartments in Belgrade to discover. Cultural highlights include a number of international film, music and literature events, a vibrant hip hop scene and several theatres.

The city also boasts numerous museums, diverse architecture, parks and shops, making it increasingly popular with international visitors. In fact, more than two-thirds of 660,000 registered tourists in 2012 were from overseas.

What not to miss

Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has a number of historic areas and buildings to tempt visitors, with highlights including:

Belgrade Fortress - This stone fortress is located on a cliff-like ridge and offers superb views over the city. Founded in the 3rd century BC, the fortress is open to the public and features popular parks, historical architecture and catacombs.

Stari Dvor - Belgrade's Old Palace was built between 1882 and 1884 and was once a royal residence. It was damaged in both of the World Wards, but has since been restored. Nowadays, it is home to the city assembly but is open to visitors on guided tours.

Skadarlija - This short cobbled street is Belgrade's main Bohemian district and a major tourist attraction. It features restaurants, antique and souvenir shops and is popular with young families and couples.

Nikola Pašić Square - This town square in downtown Belgrade was built in the 1950s, making it the city's youngest square. It features a large fountain, a monument to the square's namesake and the Museum of Yugoslav History.

How to get to the city

International visitors typically arrive at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which is located approximately 20km west of the city centre. More than three million passengers travel through the airport each year. The cheapest way to get to the city from the airport is by public bus. It is also possible to take a taxi by first obtaining a voucher from the information stand in the arrivals hall. This states the price you will pay at the end of the journey and is designed to prevent customers from being ripped off.

When to go

Early summer and early autumn are typically regarded as the best times of year to visit Belgrade. The middle of summer can be uncomfortably hot, while the winter months tend to be unpleasantly cold.
